Folliculitis
Treatment.

Red, itchy bumps around hair follicles — on the beard line, legs, bikini area, chest, back or scalp — are one of the most common and most misdiagnosed skin complaints we see across Greater Montreal. Most cases are triggered by shaving, waxing, friction and trapped sweat, which means they keep coming back until the cause is addressed. At New Age Spa, our certified medical estheticians treat the follicle itself and remove the trigger. Four clinics. A personalized plan. Book your free consultation today.

Folliculitis Treatment in Greater Montreal.

Folliculitis is inflammation of the hair follicle — the tiny pocket each hair grows from. It shows up as clusters of small red bumps or whiteheads around individual hairs, often itchy, tender, or mistaken for acne. It is most common wherever hair is removed or rubbed: the beard and neck, legs, bikini line, underarms, chest, back, buttocks and scalp.

The reason folliculitis is so frustrating is that it recurs. Shaving and waxing irritate the follicle and leave a sharp hair tip that can curl back into the skin; tight clothing and trapped sweat keep the follicle occluded; and the resulting inflammation makes the next shave worse. Treating the bumps alone never ends the cycle — you have to remove the trigger. That is exactly how a folliculitis plan at New Age Spa is built, across our Montreal, Laval, Saint-Léonard and West Island clinics.

Because folliculitis closely overlaps with ingrown hairs and razor bumps, your free consultation starts by identifying which one you actually have — they respond to different plans.

Understanding 01

What Causes Folliculitis?

Nearly every case we see traces back to something mechanical. Shaving and waxing are the biggest single trigger — they leave a sharp, angled hair tip that can pierce the follicle wall or curl back into the skin, and repeated passes strip the protective barrier. Friction and occlusion come next: tight leggings, gym gear, helmets, collars and long hours in sweat-damp clothing keep the follicle blocked and warm. On the chest and back, a yeast overgrowth that thrives in that same warm, occluded environment produces a uniform, itchy, acne-like rash often mistaken for breakouts. Bacteria can colonise an already-irritated follicle, and poorly maintained hot tubs are a classic short-lived cause. Coarse or tightly curled hair raises the risk substantially, which is why the beard and bikini line are the most affected areas. Each cause has a different answer — and that is why we diagnose before we treat.

Treatments That Clear Folliculitis

There is no single cure for folliculitis, because there is no single cause. The most durable results come from calming the current flare, decongesting the follicles, and then removing the trigger so it does not return. Below are the core options we use at New Age Spa. Each links to a dedicated treatment page, and your free consultation determines the right mix, sequence and intensity for your skin tone and hair type.

Laser Hair Removal

When shaving or waxing is the trigger, permanently reducing the hair is the only thing that ends the cycle. Our GentleMax Pro treats the follicle at the root — fewer hairs means fewer follicles to inflame, and no more sharp regrowth piercing the skin. It is the single most effective long-term answer for beard, bikini and leg folliculitis, and it is safe for every skin tone with the right settings.

A Three-Step Approach That Actually Holds

Folliculitis has a flare and a cause. Treating only the flare guarantees it returns. Your esthetician sequences the plan to settle the skin first, then remove the trigger.

Calm & Decongest — Facial or Peel
Step 1

We settle the active flare first. Deep cleansing with professional extractions, or a salicylic peel where congestion is deeper, clears the blocked follicles and reduces redness and itching. Nothing aggressive goes onto inflamed skin — this step makes everything after it work better.

Decongestion · Calming · 1–3 sessions
Remove the Trigger — Laser Hair Reduction
Step 2

If shaving or waxing is causing it — and in most cases it is — this is the step that ends the cycle. A GentleMax Pro course progressively reduces the hair in the affected area, so there is no sharp regrowth to pierce the follicle and no need to keep irritating the skin. Results build over a planned series.

Protect & Maintain — Aftercare Routine
Step 3

We set the habits that keep it away: how to exfoliate without over-scrubbing, what to change about clothing and post-workout timing, and a maintenance cadence. Most clients hold their results with occasional top-ups rather than continuous treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, although they look similar and are constantly confused. Acne begins with oil and dead skin plugging a pore, then bacteria. Folliculitis is inflammation of the hair follicle itself, usually triggered by shaving, waxing, friction or trapped sweat, and each bump sits around a visible hair. The distinction matters because the treatments differ — acne plans target oil and cell turnover, while folliculitis plans target the follicle and, above all, the hair-removal method causing it. Identifying which you have is the first thing we do at your free consultation.

For folliculitis driven by shaving or waxing — the most common kind — permanently reducing the hair is the most effective long-term solution there is, because it removes the trigger rather than managing the symptom. Fewer hairs means fewer follicles that can become inflamed, and no sharp regrowth curling back into the skin. It is not instant: results build over a planned series of sessions. If your folliculitis is driven by something else, such as yeast overgrowth on the chest and back, laser is not the answer and we will say so.

Ideally not during an active flare — both re-traumatise the follicle and will prolong it. If you must remove hair, do it in the direction of growth with a clean single-blade razor and never dry-shave. This is exactly the trap that makes folliculitis chronic: the hair removal causes the flare, the flare makes the next hair removal worse. Breaking that loop is the point of a proper plan.

The common irritation-driven kind is not passed from person to person. Some bacterial and hot-tub-related forms can spread through shared razors, towels, or poorly maintained water — so do not share razors or towels while you have an active flare. If bumps are spreading rapidly, filling with pus, painful, or accompanied by fever, that needs a physician rather than an esthetics clinic, and we will refer you.

It depends entirely on the cause and the area. Settling an active flare often takes one to three facial or peel sessions. Removing the trigger with laser hair reduction is a planned series, since hair grows in cycles and only actively growing follicles respond. Your free consultation gives you a specific number and a realistic timeline for your skin — we would rather set honest expectations than oversell a package.

Yes. All four of our Greater Montreal clinics work with every skin tone, and folliculitis and razor bumps are more common in coarse or tightly curled hair, so this is a group we treat constantly. Our GentleMax Pro includes a 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength specifically suited to deeper skin tones, and our peel and facial protocols are adjusted to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Who It Affects & When to See a Doctor

Anyone who shaves or waxes regularly — the beard and neck, bikini line, legs and underarms lead by a wide margin. Coarse or tightly curled hair raises the risk substantially. Athletes and anyone in tight or sweat-damp clothing for long stretches see it on the chest, back, shoulders and buttocks.

Beard and neck, scalp, chest, back, shoulders, buttocks, thighs, legs, underarms and bikini line — essentially anywhere with hair that also gets shaved, rubbed, or kept warm and damp.

Esthetics care is right for irritation- and hair-driven folliculitis. Please see a doctor first if the area is rapidly spreading, deeply painful, producing pus or boils, accompanied by fever, or not settling after a few weeks of sensible care. We will refer you rather than treat — and you are always welcome back once it is resolved.
