The pen is not the treatment. The cartridge, the depth and the person holding it are
By the team at New Age Spa · Updated 1 September 2026
A Dermapen DP4 is a motorised pen that drives a sterile, single-use cartridge into the skin at a depth the operator sets. Everything a device can contribute is in that sentence, and none of it is power.
This is the highest infection-risk treatment on our menu, which is why the cartridge is opened in front of you and thrown away afterwards. If you take one thing from this page, make it that question: ask to see the cartridge come out of its packet.
What the device actually contributes
| The device gives you | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| A sealed, single-use cartridge | Nothing is reused between clients. This is the whole safety argument and the reason a home roller is not a cheaper version of this |
| Depth set per zone | The forehead, the cheek and the area under the eye do not take the same depth. A roller applies one depth everywhere |
| A consistent motorised speed | Even coverage instead of the drag and tear a hand-rolled device produces |
| A predictable, repeatable pass | Which is what lets a course of sessions build on each other rather than start over |
What the device does not give you is judgement. It does not decide the depth, count the passes or notice that today is not the day. That is the person holding it, and it is the difference between a good result and a mark.
What a session actually involves
- Numbing for ten to fifteen minutes before anything starts.
- Two controlled passes, worked to an even, fine pinpoint response across the area. More passes is not a better treatment.
- A calming mask and light therapy over the treated skin afterwards — a soothing, hydrating mask, not a brightening one.
- Redness for two to three days, like moderate sunburn. Sunscreen resumes the following day rather than immediately.
- A series of at least three, spaced out. The healing between sessions is the treatment; a single session is a sample, not a plan.
We also ask for a cleansing facial about two weeks beforehand. That is not an upsell — it clears congestion so the needling is not driving anything into skin that should have been emptied first.
What it is genuinely good for
Indented acne scarring, general texture and firmness, and some stretch marks — all slowly, over a series and several months. The realistic ceiling for each is set out in most acne scars are not scars and stretch marks. Where it sits among the gentler options is in non-invasive is a marketing word.
Who should not have it
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Active acne, any skin infection, or cold sores in the area. Needling across these spreads them.
- A history of keloid scarring.
- Recent oral acne medication, where a waiting period applies and your prescriber decides it.
- Some heart and immune conditions, and certain antibiotics. Tell us what you take; it is our job to check rather than yours to know.
What we will not do
- Reuse a cartridge. Ever, for any reason.
- Go deeper than the area takes because a client asked for stronger.
- Needle over active acne, infection or cold sores.
- Sell a single session as a treatment plan.
See a doctor if
You develop increasing pain, swelling, pus or fever after a needling treatment. That is urgent. Also see a physician about painful or cystic acne, a keloid history, or recent oral acne medication before booking anything.
