Microneedling (DP4) for Smile Lines & Nasolabial Folds in Montreal

Microneedling (DP4) for Smile Lines & Nasolabial Folds in Montreal
You catch yourself in a photo and there they are — those two lines running from the sides of your nose down past the corners of your mouth. Smile lines, nasolabial folds, "parentheses," whatever you call them, they tend to deepen quietly through your 30s and 40s. Here's the honest conversation we have with every client who points them out in our chair: microneedling can genuinely soften that area — but only if we're clear about what kind of line we're actually treating.
At New Age Spa, microneedling with the Dermapen DP4 is one of our most-booked treatments for women in their 30s, 40s and beyond across Montreal, Laval, Saint-Léonard and the West Island. Here's how we use it for the smile-line area, who it suits, and where we'll tell you straight that something else fits better — no overpromising.
First, what's actually creating your smile lines?
This matters more than anything, because it decides whether microneedling is the right tool. During your consultation, this is the first thing your esthetician sorts out:
- Fine surface lines and crepey texture around the mouth and cheeks — the etched-in lines that come from thinning collagen and sun exposure. This is exactly what microneedling is built for.
- A genuine deep fold — a crease that's there even when your face is completely relaxed, driven by loss of cheek support and volume. Honestly, no needle rebuilds lost structure. We'll talk about laser skin tightening or TruWave EMS for laxity, and we'll never pretend microneedling alone will erase a deep fold.
Most of us are somewhere in between. That's why our estheticians build a realistic plan around your skin — microneedling to firm and smooth the skin quality, and an honest expectation of how much the fold itself will soften.
How microneedling softens that area
The DP4 glides over the skin creating thousands of microscopic channels. Your body reads them as tiny injuries and floods the area with a controlled healing response — fresh collagen and elastin built right where the skin has thinned. Over a few months, fine lines around the mouth soften, the skin feels firmer and bouncier, and the whole smile-line zone looks smoother and more even. It's your own collagen doing the work, which is why results keep improving well after your last session.

What a microneedling session actually looks like here
We're particular about this, and we want you to see it:
- We open a brand-new, sealed cartridge in front of you — every needle is single-use and goes straight to the sharps bin after. This is non-negotiable in our rooms.
- A thorough double cleanse (we finish with G.M. Collin Mousse Nettoyante) so we're working on perfectly clean skin.
- Numbing cream for 10–15 minutes while your esthetician completes your consultation — so it's genuinely comfortable.
- Treatment in even, controlled passes across the full face — out to the hairline, the under-eye area, around the smile and along the jawline — with extra, focused attention on the nasolabial area, to a light, even "pinpoint" flush. That uniform flush is how we know the depth is right.
- We keep the skin's own healing response working — finishing with a calming mask and LED light therapy to soothe and speed recovery, then a calming serum and barrier cream.
Plan for the appointment to run a little longer than you'd expect — we built extra time into every microneedling session specifically so the prep, consultation and finish are never rushed.
One step before your first session
If your skin is congested or you haven't had a professional facial in a while, we'll usually have you do a Cleansing Facial (or a Bela MD treatment) about two weeks beforehand. Going in with clear, prepped skin protects your results and lowers the chance of a post-treatment breakout. Your esthetician will tell you honestly whether you need it.
How many sessions — and the honest timeline
Smile lines didn't appear overnight, and they don't soften overnight either. Most clients do a series of at least 3 (often 3–6) sessions, spaced about 4–6 weeks apart, with results building steadily over the months that follow as collagen rebuilds. Anyone promising to erase a fold in one session isn't being straight with you — consistency, and a realistic target, is what gets the result.
Is microneedling right for your skin? (the honest version)
It suits most skin tones and types, but it isn't for everyone, and we'd rather tell you up front:
- Active breakout right now? We treat the acne first — needling over active, inflamed acne can spread bacteria. Let's calm it, then resurface.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding, on Accutane or antibiotics, or managing a heart or immune condition? We'll postpone or recommend a gentler option.
- Mostly a deep, structural fold rather than fine lines? We'll be honest about microneedling's limits and may point you toward laser tightening or TruWave for the laxity behind it.
- Medium-to-deep skin tone (Fitzpatrick II and up)? Completely treatable — we just work more conservatively, because over-aggressive needling plus sun is the classic trigger for more pigmentation. Diligent SPF and sun-avoidance afterward are essential.
Aftercare that actually protects your results
Expect redness like a mild sunburn for about 2–3 days. Then, to protect that fresh skin:
- No SPF for the first 24 hours — your barrier is open right after needling. Resume sunscreen the next day, and then keep sun off the area for about two weeks.
- Skip the gym, sauna and hot showers for 48 hours.
- Pause active ingredients (retinol, AHAs/BHAs, vitamin C) for 5–7 days.
- Let your skin do its thing — no picking or scrubbing the flaking.
Your esthetician will walk you through all of this and send you home with it in writing. Full details live at newagespa.ca/aftercare.

Your questions, answered
Will microneedling get rid of my nasolabial folds completely?
It softens the fine lines and noticeably improves the skin quality in that zone. A genuinely deep fold is driven by lost volume and support, so microneedling won't erase it on its own — for that we'd talk about laser tightening or TruWave. Your consultation sets a realistic target.
Does it hurt?
We numb for 10–15 minutes first, so most clients find it very manageable — more pressure and vibration than pain.
How much downtime?
Redness like a light sunburn for 2–3 days. Most clients are back to normal — with mineral makeup — the next day.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually 3–6, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with results building over the following months.
Can I go straight back into my skincare routine?
Hold off on actives (retinol, acids, vitamin C) for 5–7 days, and remember — no SPF for the first 24 hours, then daily after.
Is it safe for my skin tone?
Yes, across skin tones — we simply adjust how conservatively we work on deeper tones to avoid triggering pigmentation, and stress sun protection afterward.
Ready to soften those lines?
The best place to start is a free consultation — your esthetician will look at your skin in person, tell you honestly whether microneedling, laser tightening, or a combination is right for you, and map out a realistic plan. Book your consultation at the location nearest you — we'd love to help you feel like yourself in photos again.
