On deeper skin, chasing complete removal is the thing most likely to leave a permanent pale mark
Yes, tattoo removal can be done on deeper skin. The question worth asking is not whether, but how far. The realistic bad outcome is not a tattoo that stays — it is a pale patch in the exact shape of the tattoo that does not fill back in.
That single fact should change the plan. Pushing every last trace of ink out is what pushes the pigment out with it, so on deeper skin the sensible endpoint is often fading for a cover-up rather than clearing to bare skin.
Why it is harder here, specifically
The laser is aiming at ink, but it has to travel through skin to reach it, and melanin absorbs energy on the way. So two things happen at once: less of the pulse arrives at the ink, and more of it is absorbed by skin that was not the target. That is a different problem from treating a sun spot, where the mark itself is melanin — that case is covered in laser pigmentation on deeper skin.
The practical consequence is that settings come down and session counts go up. A course that might run six sessions on pale skin can run considerably more, and going faster to compensate is exactly the wrong move.
The three outcomes to understand before you start

What a careful course looks like
- A test area first, somewhere the design will hide it, then a wait to see how the skin behaves. Ask for this if it is not offered.
- Lower settings and longer intervals. Eight weeks rather than six is often the right call.
- No treatment on tanned skin. A tan raises the melanin the pulse must cross, and raises the risk with it. Self-tanner counts.
- Stopping at the goal, not at zero. If a cover-up is the plan, we stop when the artist has what they need.
- Judging at months. Most of the clearing happens between sessions, which is why the interval is doing the work.
Why a cover-up is often the better goal
It is not a consolation prize. Fading enough for a tattoo artist to work over the old design takes fewer sessions, less total energy into the skin, and carries markedly less risk of the pale patch that no amount of further treatment fixes. If you are open to new work in that spot, say so at the consultation, because it changes the target from the first session rather than the fifth.
If complete clearance is genuinely what you want, that is your call to make and we will tell you honestly what it will take and what it risks. What we will not do is drift toward it without having said so.

- Treat deeper skin at settings chosen for lighter skin to finish sooner.
- Treat skin that is currently tanned or recently sun-exposed.
- Push toward total clearance without telling you what it risks.
- Take on a piece where a history of keloid scarring has not been discussed first.
