Acne Treatment in Greater Montreal: Teen & Adult — Causes, Cost & Care

Acne Treatment in Greater Montreal: Teen & Adult Skin, Honestly Explained
Acne has a way of showing up at the worst possible moment — the morning of a presentation, the week before grad photos, the night you actually had plans. If you're a teen staring at a new breakout in the mirror, or a parent watching your kid lose confidence, or an adult wondering why you're still dealing with this in your 30s — you're in good company. We see all of you, every day, across our four clinics in Downtown Montreal, Laval, Saint-Léonard and Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
Here's the honest truth we tell everyone who sits in our chair: acne is very treatable, but it improves with consistency over time — not with one miracle session. Anyone who promises to "clear you up fast and forever" isn't being straight with you. What we can do is build you a realistic plan that calms the breakouts, fades what they leave behind, and gives you skin you don't have to think about all day.
Why acne happens (and why it's not your fault)
Acne comes down to a few things teaming up: skin that makes too much oil, pores that get clogged, bacteria, and inflammation. From there it shows up differently from person to person — blackheads and whiteheads, the small red bumps, or the deeper, painful cystic kind under the surface.
For teens, it's mostly hormones — the body is changing and the oil glands go into overdrive. It is incredibly common and almost never a sign that you're doing something "wrong." For adults, the usual suspects are stress, hormonal shifts around your cycle or pregnancy, and sometimes the wrong products piling on. Either way: it's biology, not a hygiene failure, and scrubbing harder usually makes it angrier.
How we actually treat active acne here
When the skin is actively breaking out, oily or congested, we start gentle and targeted — never aggressive over inflamed skin. Our go-to combination is a Deep Cleansing Facial with LED light therapy to calm inflammation and clear out the congestion, often paired with an anti-acne peel — a salicylic (BHA) peel that gets into oily pores to exfoliate and settle breakouts. Peels work best in a series of 3 or more, spaced out so the skin can respond.
One thing we're firm about: if your skin is congested or you haven't had a professional facial in a while, we'll usually start with a cleansing facial about two weeks before any peel. Going in with prepped skin protects your result and lowers the chance of a post-treatment purge. Your esthetician will tell you honestly whether you need that step.
For stubborn or cystic acne, we may offer PicoSure laser as part of the plan — and we'll also be honest when a case is better served by a doctor. Medical-grade acne (severe cystic, anything that's scarring as it goes) deserves a physician's input, and we'll say so rather than keep you in our chair.
What we do NOT do over an active breakout
We never needle or aggressively treat skin that's actively inflamed — passing a microneedling pen over active acne can spread bacteria and make things worse. We calm the breakout first, then talk about resurfacing once the skin is settled. This is one of those places where doing less, sooner, gets you a better result.
The marks acne leaves behind — and the right tool for each
This part matters more than almost anything, because "acne marks" aren't all the same thing, and the wrong treatment is how people waste their money. During your consultation, this is the first thing your esthetician sorts out:
- Indented or "rolling" scars (texture) — the little dips where the skin healed lower. This is where microneedling with the Dermapen DP4 shines, because it rebuilds collagen exactly where the skin caved in. PicoSure laser is another option for textural scarring — in your consult we'll compare both honestly and tell you which suits your skin.
- Flat brown marks (PIH — pigmentation) — the tan/brown spots a pimple leaves behind, more common and more stubborn on medium-to-deep skin tones. These are a pigment concern, not a texture one, so our first choice is a Skin Brightening Peel — not the needle, not the laser.
- Flat red or pink marks (PIE — redness) — the fresh pink shadows after a breakout. This is not pigmentation, so it doesn't belong on a brightening peel. It often fades over months on its own and responds best to calming care; persistent redness may suit calming or vascular options, which we'll discuss in person.
Most of us have a mix. That's why our estheticians often build a plan that pairs treatments — rather than asking one to do a job it was never designed for.

What about cost?
Honestly, there's no one price — and we'd be misleading you to quote a flat number, because the right plan depends on your skin. A teen with mild congestion needs something very different from an adult managing cystic breakouts plus older scarring. What we promise instead is a free consultation where we look at your skin in person, explain exactly what each option involves, and map a plan that fits your concern and your budget — including what you can do at home between visits to stretch your results.
For parents and teens
If you're bringing in a teenager, here's what we'll do: keep it gentle, keep it judgment-free, and keep the expectations real. Teen skin is sensitive and the goal is to calm and clear without over-treating. We'll teach a simple home routine that a busy teen will actually keep up — because consistency, not intensity, is what wins with acne. And we'll never push a big package on a young client; we start with the basics and build only if needed.
Is it safe for my skin tone?
Yes — across all skin tones. We just work more conservatively on medium-to-deep complexions (Fitzpatrick II and up), because over-aggressive treatment plus sun exposure is the classic trigger for more pigmentation. Diligent SPF and sun-avoidance afterward are essential, and we'll make sure you leave knowing exactly how to protect your result.
Aftercare that protects your results
Aftercare is half the result. After a peel, plan on SPF 50+ daily and no sun for about four weeks, skip the gym, sauna and hot showers for 48 hours, pause active ingredients (retinol, AHAs/BHAs, vitamin C) for 5–7 days, and don't pick at any flaking. If your plan includes microneedling for scars, the rules differ slightly — no SPF for the first 24 hours (your barrier is open), then daily after. Your esthetician will walk you through everything and send you home with it in writing; full details live at newagespa.ca/aftercare.

Your questions, answered
How long until I see results?
Acne improves with consistency over time, not overnight. Many clients notice calmer skin within a few weeks of starting, with steady improvement over the following months. We'll set a realistic timeline at your consult.
Can you get rid of my acne completely and for good?
We won't promise total or permanent clearance — no honest clinic can. What we can do is significantly improve it and give you a plan (in-clinic plus home care) to keep it under control long-term.
My teen has acne — are these treatments okay for them?
Yes, with a gentle, age-appropriate approach. We start conservative, teach a simple home routine, and never over-treat young skin.
Will treating acne also remove my scars?
They're two different jobs. We calm the active acne first, then address scars or marks afterward — textural scars with microneedling or PicoSure, brown marks with a brightening peel, redness with calming care.
Does any of it hurt?
A deep cleansing facial is comfortable. Peels can tingle. If your plan ever includes microneedling, we numb for 10–15 minutes first. We'll always keep you comfortable and explain each step.
Is it safe for sensitive or darker skin?
Yes — we simply adjust how conservatively we work and stress sun protection afterward to avoid triggering pigmentation.
Ready for clearer skin?
The best place to start is a free consultation — your esthetician will look at your skin in person, tell you honestly what will and won't help, and map out a realistic plan for your concern and budget. Book your free consultation at the location nearest you — we'd love to help you (or your teen) feel good in your skin again.
