We cannot tell you what 2030 wants. We can tell you what we hire for
By the team at New Age Spa · Updated 1 September 2026
Every article forecasting the skills of the next five years is guessing, ours included if we tried. Nobody publishing a list like that has data on what Montreal clinics will be buying in 2029, and the honest thing is to say so rather than dress a guess as research.
What we can tell you is what makes us hire someone, because we do the hiring. It is a smaller claim and a more useful one, and it splits neatly into skills that will date and skills that will not.
The ones that will not date
- Knowing when not to treat. This is the single thing that separates a hire from a pass. Someone who can look at a tanned arm, a plaque of psoriasis or a fresh wax and say "not today" is worth more than someone faster on the machine, because that person is the one who does not injure a client.
- Skin typing, done out loud. Not reciting a scale — explaining what you would change about the settings for the person in front of you, and why.
- Extraction technique. The most booked skill and the one taught worst. Softening properly, even pressure, knowing when to stop rather than forcing something that will mark.
- Consultation and notes. Dull, and it decides whether a six-session course produces a result or a shrug. Consistent notes and consistent photographs are how anyone can tell whether the plan is working.
- Ergonomics. Wrists, shoulders, posture at the bed. It reads as a filler module until it is the reason someone leaves the trade at forty.
The ones that will
Device skills date, because devices are replaced. Someone hired for one platform who cannot transfer to the next one has bought a short career. What transfers is understanding why a setting is chosen — wavelength against skin type, energy against tissue — and that survives the machine it was learned on.
So the useful way to read any list of in-demand skills, including this one, is to ask which items are about a device and which are about judgement. The wavelength argument is a good example of the second kind, and it is set out in laser on Asian skin: which wavelength.
What we actually look at in an interview
| What we ask | What we are listening for |
|---|---|
| Tell me about a client you did not treat | Whether one exists, and whether the reasoning is about the client rather than the rulebook |
| How many supervised hours on real clients? | The number, and whether classmates are being counted as clients |
| Which devices, by name? | Specifics. "Laser" on its own tells us the training was a slide deck |
| What happened the last time someone reacted? | That they have seen it, and know what was done about it |
| How do you keep notes? | Whether there is a habit or an intention |
Where these are taught here
The laser certification sits inside the 710-hour Advanced programme, and the 830-hour Medical programme adds skin rejuvenation and microneedling on the same foundation. The judgement half is not a module; it is what supervised hours on real clients produce, which is why the question about them matters more than the brochure. The path and the order are in starting an esthetics career.
What we will not tell you
- Which devices will dominate in 2030. We do not know, and neither does the article that says it does.
- What any skill is worth in salary. We have no substantiated figure.
- That a certificate list is the same thing as being employable.
- That the newest device on a menu is the skill worth chasing.
