Med spa busy and slow seasons in Quebec: a month-by-month calendar
By the team at New Age Spa · Updated 30 August 2026
The short answer. Quebec’s aesthetic calendar is not flat and it is not the same for every service. Laser concentrates from October to March. Facials and injectables spike before Christmas and before weddings. July and August are the trough for almost everything except body and bridal. And November behaves unlike any other month in the year.
The mistake that costs money is treating a predictable dip as a crisis and discounting into it. Below is the shape of the year and what to do in each part of it.
No industry body publishes seasonality data for Canadian clinics, so what follows is our own observation from running four clinics in Greater Montreal since 2020. It is a pattern, not a law — your mix of services and your neighbourhood will shift the edges. But the shape holds, and a clinic that plans against it stops being surprised.
The year, month by month
| Period | What happens | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| January–February | Strong. New-year intent meets the start of laser season; skin concerns are visible after the holidays | Book courses of treatment, not single visits. This is when a package sells itself |
| March–April | Steady. Pre-summer preparation begins in earnest | Fill the calendar with the multi-session work that has to finish before June |
| May–June | A last push, then a drop as holidays begin | Sell the summer-safe services now, before the trough arrives |
| July–August | The trough. Clients are away, sun exposure rules out much of the laser menu | Reduced hours, staff holidays, maintenance, training. Do not discount |
| September | Sharp recovery. Routines resume and laser season reopens | Re-engage lapsed clients while intent is high |
| October | Strong and building | Full capacity; this is when to add hours rather than promotions |
| November | Unlike any other month — see below | Plan it as its own project, months in advance |
| December | Front half busy with events and gifting; back half collapses | Gift cards, and close properly rather than half-staffing dead days |
Why laser owns the dark months
Light-based treatments and sun exposure do not mix, and a course takes several sessions spaced weeks apart. That arithmetic pushes the whole category into autumn and winter: a client starting in October finishes before the beach, and one starting in June cannot. It also means your busiest laser weeks are decided months earlier by whether you were visible in September.
November is a category of its own
Black Friday has become the single largest commercial event of a Canadian clinic’s year, and it distorts everything around it. A month of pre-selling can carry a quarter — and it books chair time you will owe in the spring, at a price you set in November.
That is the trade nobody explains: a big November is not free revenue, it is revenue borrowed from your future capacity. Sell more sessions than your rooms can deliver by June and you have created a redemption problem that looks like success on the day. We go through how to run it without that outcome in Black Friday for med spas.
What the trough is actually for
July and August are not a failure. They are the only weeks of the year when a clinic can do the things that are impossible when it is full:
- Staff holidays, taken deliberately, so nobody is away in October
- Device servicing booked into the quiet weeks rather than a busy one
- Training — new protocols, new hires brought up to speed
- The work you never get to: photographs, price-list review, the website’s French half
- Reduced hours, honestly published, rather than paying staff to sit in an empty clinic
What the trough is not for is discounting. A summer sale trains your market to wait for one, and it arrives every year thereafter. What to run instead is in the slow season without discounting.
Not every service follows the same curve
| Service | Peak | Trough |
|---|---|---|
| Laser hair removal | October–March | June–August |
| Pigment and resurfacing | November–February | Summer, for the same sun reason |
| Facials | December and spring events | Late summer |
| Body and contouring | January and April–June | Late autumn |
| Bridal | Bookings in winter, treatments in spring | Autumn |
A menu spread across these curves is far steadier than one concentrated in a single category. That is an argument for a second device eventually — but only once the first one’s calendar is genuinely full, not before.
How to plan against the year
Budget monthly, never annually. An annual budget divided by twelve will tell you July is a disaster and November is a miracle. Both readings are wrong, and both lead to bad decisions.
Bank the peaks. The cash from a strong autumn is not profit until the summer is paid for. Treat October and November as funding July, because they are.
Hire against the curve. A technician recruited in August is available for the season. One recruited in October is needed immediately and interviewed badly.
Protect the spring capacity you sold in November. Know how many prepaid sessions are outstanding and what they will cost you in chair time. That is a real liability with a delivery date — see prepaid packages and gift cards.
None of this is exotic; it is simply invisible until your second year, when you notice the shape repeating. A first-year operator who plans against it skips a year of expensive surprise.
Frequently asked
When is the slow season for a med spa in Quebec?
July and August for most of the menu, with a second short dip in the back half of December. Laser is quietest across the summer because sun exposure and light-based treatment do not mix.
When is the busiest time of year?
October through February, with November distorted by Black Friday pre-selling. January is strong on new-year intent, and the front half of December is busy with events and gifting.
Should I discount during the slow months?
No. A seasonal sale teaches clients to wait for it, and the discount returns every year. Use the trough for holidays, servicing, training and the work you never otherwise reach.
Why is laser hair removal seasonal?
Because a course runs over several sessions spaced weeks apart, and sun exposure rules it out. Clients starting in autumn finish before summer; clients starting in June cannot.
Does Black Friday really matter for a clinic?
In Canada it has become the largest commercial event of the year for many clinics. It also books chair time you must deliver months later at a price set in November, so it needs planning rather than improvisation.
